Proposition E – How council sets its own rules

Proposition E removes the City Charter requirement that the City Council adopt its own rules of procedure and order of business by ordinance. This is a charter amendment that the City Council put on the ballot.

An ordinance is the city’s version of a law. Requiring one just to change how council meetings run (speaking time, the order of agenda items and so on) adds formality without adding much protection. Council would still adopt its rules in public meetings.

This is a procedural cleanup. We found no organized opposition.

Recommendation: Yes
