Proposition F – Campaign contribution limit updates
Proposition F makes two changes to the City Charter’s campaign finance rules. This is a charter amendment that the City Council put on the ballot.
- It defines what counts as an “election” for the charter’s campaign finance limits.
- It changes when the city adjusts campaign contribution and spending limits for inflation. Today the adjustment happens when the council adopts the budget. Under Prop F it would happen by January 1 each year, or as state law provides.
The limits themselves don’t change. Austin’s current limit is $500 per contributor per election, and it would still be adjusted using the same inflation index. A fixed January date means candidates and donors know the limit before the election year starts.
